TALLINN, May 28, BNS - The European Commission has encouraged Estonia to deal with preparations necessary for the development of nuclear energy and offers support in the sphere on nuclear energy regulation.

The European Commission is preparing an important directive on nuclear waste and safety, Einari Kisel, deputy state secretary for the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communitions, who Wednesday met with Dominique Ristor, deputy director general of the Transport and Energy General Directorate of the European Commission, told BNS.

The Commission has a database on how nuclear energy has been developed and what this involves. Kisel said that Estonia could get from the Commission assistance in fixing the criteria to be set to nuclear energy developers.

Kisel also informed a representative of the European Commission that the nuclear energy discussion was only in its initial stage in Estonia and political decisions on the building of a nuclear power plant would only take place after several years.

Opportunities of the construction of a nuclear power plant are being studied by the state-owned power utility Eesti Energia, which has also said that the decision about the building of a nuclear power plant in Estonia could be born in seven to eight years. At the same time the company will make the preparations to making the decision.
